(AP) — Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith has been elected into the team’s Ring of Fame.

Smith, who set every major receiving record in franchise history, becomes the 23rd member of the Broncos to have his name etched into the inner facade encircling Sports Authority Field at Mile High. He will be inducted during a halftime ceremony on Sept. 23.

An undrafted player out of Missouri Southern, Smith finished his career with 849 catches for 11,389 yards receiving and 68 TDs.

Smith helped the Broncos to two Super Bowls and was a three-time Pro Bowl selection.

Said owner Pat Bowlen: “Players like Rod don’t come through your door very often, but he came through ours every day with a purpose and hunger to be great.”

Quan Cosby is now a Denver Broncos wide receiver, as Eddie Royal’s injury will keep him out for at least two weeks.

Sep 20, 2011 – On Tuesday afternoon, the Denver Broncos announced three roster moves. First, wide receiver Quan Cosby was signed to active roster. In order to clear roster space for him, running back Jeremiah Johnson was waived. The other move was the addition of tight end John Nalbone to the practice squad.

Cosby played in 32 games for the Cincinnati Bengals over the last two seasons, but he was let go during the final cuts and waiver wire process. He was used more as a punt and kick returner than as a receiver, but he will likely wind up playing in the slot for the Broncos. At 28, Cosby got a late in football because he played minor league baseball for several years.

Johnson joined the Broncos’ active roster last week after it was clear that Knowshon Moreno was not going to play. However, it now appears that Moreno has a better chance at playing this week with this move.

Nalbone was a fifth-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2009, but his only NFL action came in two games during the 2010 season. The Broncos are down to two wide receivers following Julius Thomas’ injury, but adding another tight end to the roster is not in the air right now.

Broncos’ Thomas undergoes surgery on Achilles

ENGLEWOOD — Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas underwent surgery Monday on his torn Achilles’ tendon, an injury he sustained during offseason workouts in Atlanta last week.

Thomas’ recovery will take at least six months and, depending on the severity of the injury, he could miss all of next season.

Thomas tweeted Monday morning that he was heading into surgery.

Earlier, he tweeted about his mother and grandmother, who have been incarcerated on drug charges since he was 12: “Only if i had my mother and granny here with me, stuff would be so different.”

Thomas had a tough year after leaving Georgia Tech following his junior season.

He fractured his left foot in pre-draft workouts but was still the first receiver selected in the draft when the Broncos chose him at No. 22, three spots ahead of their other first-round pick, quarterback Tim Tebow.

Thomas was just starting to flash his athleticism and mobility, using his 6-foot-3, 230-pound frame to outjump defenders when he re-injured his surgically repaired foot early in training camp and didn’t return until after the opener.

He had a spectacular debut in Week 2, catching eight passes for 97 yards and a touchdown against Seattle, but he never tallied more than three catches in any game the rest of the season. He was knocked out of one game with a concussion while returning a kickoff and was also sidelined for the final five weeks of the season with a sprained ankle.

Thomas played in 10 games, starting twice and finishing with 22 receptions for 283 yards and two scores. He also returned 16 kicks for a 24.9-yard average.

He showed enough promise, as did fellow rookie Eric Decker, for new coach John Fox to proclaim upon his hiring that the wide receiver corps led by Pro Bowler Brandon Lloyd and Jabar Gaffney was the area that needed the least attention during the team’s massive makeover.

That’s changed.

First, slot receiver Eddie Royal underwent a hip operation that will keep him out at least until late May, and now Thomas will be sidelined at least through August and maybe much longer.

Royal’s surgery briefly opened a window for Thomas to get more playing time, but he got hurt Wednesday while working out in Atlanta, where he lives in the offseason.

The Broncos might now have to consider drafting a wide receiver in April.

There is the quick update of the day.

Broncos’ Demaryius Thomas Undergoes Achilles Tendon Surgery On Monday

Read More: A.J. Green (FL – Georgia), Demaryius Thomas (WR – DEN), Denver Broncos, Georgia Bulldogs

According to his Twitter page, Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas is having surgery on his torn Achilles tendon this Monday morning. He is expected to take six to eight months to fully recover from this injury that was sustained while doing an offseason workout in Atlanta, Ga.

If the 2011 NFL season does take place, Thomas could start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List. Should he remain on that list to start the regular season, Thomas would be unable to return to the team until after the sixth game of the season. The team then has three-weeks to determine if he can be active or if he should be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

While there have been no whispers from the Broncos or NFL sources, Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver A.J. Green could be a remote, however unlikely choice for the Broncos with the No. 2 pick.

Later Monday, Royal tweeted: “Thanks for all the support and prayers surgery was a success. I look forward to being back on the field and 100 (percent) come May”

A key component of Denver’s deep receiving corps, Royal had a bounce-back season in 2010 despite dealing with a nagging groin injury all year. The third-year pro caught 59 passes for 627 yards and three touchdowns. He also averaged 11.9 yards on 25 punt returns and 21.4 yards on five kickoff returns.

Any setbacks in Royal’s recovery could open up more playing time for Demaryius Thomas, the Broncos’ top draft pick last year who had an injury-plagued rookie season.
