DENVER (AP) — Elvis Dumervil, returning from a torn chest muscle last August and hoping to regain the form that produced an NFL-high 17 sacks in 2009, was a force against an offense led by Tim Tebow on Saturday in the Denver Broncos’ intrasquad scrimmage.

Dumervil bulked up 15 pounds to 260 for his conversion back to end in a 4-3 defense.

Playing with the first-team defense against a second unit led by Tebow, Dumervil rushed around the edge with abandon, chasing Tebow out of the pocket and twice prompting the officials to blow their whistles to signify a dead ball before there was contact.

Rookie Von Miller added a third sack of Tebow, who could only muster three pass attempts, completing one. He ran for 5 yards in his time against the first-team defense, which didn’t allow a point in the scrimmage at Invesco Field at Mile High.

“It felt good to come out and contribute to the team,” Dumervil said as he signed autographs following the scrimmage. “That’s what you miss most of all: coming out here in front of the fans, back here at Invesco. It’s a magic place and it’s exciting. It was a good feeling being back on the field.”

Forgive Tebow if he wasn’t celebrating the same way.

“Elvis made things interesting, actually,” he said with a smile, adding, “I told him if we’d been going to the ground it might have been a little different. We were having fun with it. But he was making things difficult, that’s for sure. He’s a great player.”

Miller’s sack showed the type of two-sided pressure the Broncos envision this season in their pass rush. They had just 23 sacks last season, finishing last in the league in total yards allowed.

“We just want to keep doing it. It’s just a start,” Miller said. “We want to keep it going. Hopefully it will carry over to the preseason and we’ll take it from there.”

Starting quarterback Kyle Orton, facing the second-string defense, went 4 for 7 for 84 yards in leading the offense to two field goals.

Two dropped passes and Eric Decker just missing a touchdown because he didn’t get two feet down in the end zone marred what might have been perfect completion percentage for Orton.

Running back Knowshon Moreno’s 45-yard catch-and-run was the top highlight until tight end Dante Rosario went up and over safety Darcel McBath for a 31-yard catch on a left-sideline jump ball from Brady Quinn. Rookie tight end Virgil Green eventually capped the 70-yard drive with a 10-yard TD reception.

Quinn completed 7 of 8 passes for 77 yards against the No. 2 and No. 3 defenses.

“The young guys are kind of coming out, getting the system and coming along,” Quinn said. “I’m kind of happy about that.”

Quinn has pushed Tebow in recent days for the backup spot behind Orton. The two have been evenly splitting reps with the second string at practice. Tebow on Saturday took nine snaps vs. the starters while leading the second unit before departing. Quinn went against the first defense for four plays before 11 reps against the backups.

“I think they all made some progress,” coach John Fox said of his three top QBs. “I think probably Tim had the roughest duty going against the first-team defense and that’s tough, but he’s a tough guy and he made things happen. He made a couple of good throws, that third-and-(16) that came up a yard short was a big play.

“We’ll just keep evaluating them. This was just a small taste of that.”

Several players who returned to practice midweek were held out of the team portion of the scrimmage including defensive linemen Derrick Harvey, Ty Warren and Brian Dawkins and running back Willis McGahee.

The Broncos are only five days removed from their first preseason game in Dallas on Thursday night.

“In practice some things can be cloudy, but out here it seems like it’s in HD,” Moreno said in summing up the scrimmage. “It felt really good to get back out here on this field.”

Notes: RB Mario Fannin was waived/injured Saturday, one day after injuring a knee and being carted off the practice field. Denver signed C.J. Gable, who had been cut by New Orleans, to take Fannin’s roster spot. LT Ryan Clady is back at full strength after a full offseason to train after knee surgery. “I feel like my knee’s 100 percent. It’s been a nice offseason for me to get that knee back to where it needs to be so I can play at the level I want to play at,” he said. Clady made first-team All Pro in 2009. … K Matt Prater boomed a 54-yard field goal in a special-teams period. He’s competing with Steven Hauschka, who finished the season after Prater went on injured reserve last December with a groin injury.

Denver Broncos offensive tackle Ryan Clady is 100…

Offensive tackle Ryan Clady spent nearly all of the 2010 preseason watching from the sideline as he recovered from knee surgery.

He made a start in every regular- season game, but it was clear that the knee injury — which happened in April 2010 — affected his performance. But he said Saturday he is 100 percent healthy and eager to prove he can play as well as he did in 2009, when he made the all-pro first team.

“I definitely feel a lot better,” Clady said. “It’s been a nice offseason for me to get that knee back to where it needs to be so I can play at the level I want to play at.”

Coach Quinn.

Brady Quinn took all of his snaps in Saturday’s scrimmage with the third-team offense, a group that included a lot of rookies.

“You’ve got to teach them a little bit and tell them what they have here and there. There’s just a little bit of teaching going on while I am trying to play as well,” said Quinn, who made 12 starts at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns before being traded to the Broncos last year.

Quinn completed 7-of-8 passes Saturday, including a touchdown strike to rookie tight end Virgil Green.

“I feel more comfortable and confident in it, and now I am able to help other guys a little,” Quinn said.

On hold.

Several of the newest Broncos were held out of the scrimmage.

Defensive linemen Ty Warren and Derrick Harvey didn’t participate in any of the drills. Running back Willis McGahee and safety Brian Dawkins participated in the first part of practice but not in the scrimmage.

“They aren’t ready for (live contact) yet,” coach John Fox said. “Just being smart and keeping them healthy for (the) Sept. 12 (regular- season opener against the Raiders).”

Pass the playbook.

When their first-team offense was on the field Saturday, the Broncos called three running plays and eight passing plays. Expect that ratio to eventually change.

“We’ll blend in the run,” Fox said.

Fox said the Broncos wanted to work on parts of their passing game during the scrimmage, including pass protection.

The Broncos were short on tailbacks Saturday, with McGahee being held out of full-team drills and LenDale White slowly returning from a sore back.

Denver waived rookie running back Mario Fannin, who suffered a knee injury during Friday’s practice. He will be replaced on the roster by running back C.J. Gable, who was claimed off waivers from the New Orleans Saints.

Footnotes.

Linebacker D.J. Williams (thigh), wide receiver Eron Riley (undisclosed injury) and defensive tackles Louis Leonard (knee) and Mitch Unrein (knee) didn’t practice Saturday. Wesley Woodyard was the starter at weakside linebacker, replacing Williams. . . . Official attendance at Invesco Field at Mile High was 17,982, about 2,000 fewer than last year.

Denver Broncos Sign WR David Anderson

Read More: David Anderson (WR – HOU), Amobi Okoye (DT – HOU), Denver Broncos

On Saturday, the Houston Texans placed defensive tackle Amobi Okoye and wide receiver David Anderson on waivers. The Broncos, an interested party, did want Okoye, but he was snatched up by the Chicago Bears. Instead, the Broncos wound up signing Anderson, who was flying to Denver on Saturday night.

Coloradans may be familiar with Anderson from his career with the Colorado St. Rams (2002-2005). He went on to the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick by the Houston Texans in 2006. He’s been a rarely used receiver in Houston, having a career best year in 2009 (38 receptions, 370 yards).

The Broncos could use depth at the wide receiver position. The top three slots are for Brandon Lloyd, Eddie Royal and Eric Decker. Demaryius Thomas is out for several weeks into the regular season and most of the other receivers on the training camp roster are less than exciting. The team did sign several undrafted rookie free agent wide receivers.

Denver Broncos cut veteran safety Renaldo Hill

When Josh McDaniels unveiled his first free-agent class as coach of the Broncos, three players were the foundation.

They were running back Correll Buckhalter, wide receiver Jabar Gaffney and safety Renaldo Hill.

The Broncos’ new regime, with John Elway at the top of the football flow chart, sees the foundation differently.

Buckhalter was told he would be released before training camp opened, Gaffney was traded and Saturday the Broncos cut Hill. Hill’s release came just hours after he said he would definitely be on the practice field today. Hill had been unable to practice during camp because of what team officials called dehydration.

Asked why he was being held out after watching Saturday’s morning workout from the sidelines, Hill said: “Just dehydration. Maybe it’s coming from sea level and getting back to Denver. But I just didn’t get the fluids back in my body, so it was something they just wanted to monitor.”

Hill said he had been cleared to practice today by the Broncos’ medical staff.

Hill likely faced an uphill battle for a job. The Broncos used two picks in this year’s draft to acquire safeties. Also, veteran starter Brian Dawkins renegotiated his contract to stay with the Broncos.

Hill was scheduled to count $2.78 million against Denver’s salary cap this season.

Free-agent front.

Veteran defensive lineman Ty Warren, a first-round pick of the Patriots in the 2003 draft, met with Broncos officials Saturday night. The Broncos won’t have to go far to get a medical opinion on the hip injury that forced Warren, now a free agent, to miss last season.

One of the Broncos’ team surgeons — Dr. Mark Philippon of The Steadman Clinic — did Warren’s surgery. Before suffering his injury last August, Warren started 92 of 105 games since the Patriots drafted him.

Wide receiver David Anderson, a former Colorado State star, accepted a one-year contract offer from the Broncos.

Anderson was cut by the Texans. He played five seasons for Houston and had 11 receptions for 117 yards in 2010.

The Broncos were close to completing a deal to bring back defensive tackle Marcus Thomas.

Footnotes.

The Broncos drew 2,537 fans to their Saturday morning practice at team headquarters. Veteran linebacker D.J. Williams was held out of the morning practice because of what coach John Fox called a strained thigh. Rookie linebacker Von Miller, who left Friday’s practice because of a bruised thigh, participated Saturday.

Gotta run!.
