Injury bug biting Broncos again

The Denver Broncos may have to address receiver this offseason after planning to concentrate on a porous defense.

For this second time this week, it has been disclosed that a young Denver receiver is dealing with a significant injury. The team confirmed Thursday that second-year receiver Demaryius Thomas suffered an Achilles tendon injury and that he will need 6 to 8 months of recovery time. That means the earliest Thomas will be back is training camp. The latest he could return is in October.

It has been reported that Thomas suffered a torn Achilles, but it was unknown whether it was completely torn or partially torn. The team didn’t elaborate on his recovery other than the timeline for his return. Earlier this week, it was reported that Denver third-year receiver Eddie Royal underwent hip surgery. The team is expecting him back in May.

Thomas and Royal are expected to be a big part of Denver’s offense, so these injuries have to be deflating. Denver was ravaged by injury last year beginning with the patella tendon injury star left tackle Ryan Clady suffered while playing basketball in April and when star pass rusher Elvis Dumervil was lost for the season with a torn pectoral muscle early in training camp.

The injuries to Thomas and Royal have to be making Denver nervous as it starts the John Fox era. Thomas has dealt with a severe rash of injures since he fractured his foot in a pre-draft workout. During last season, he missed much of training camp last year because of issues from that injury and then he missed the final five games of the season with an ankle injury.

The big, strong, fast, explosive Thomas had 22 catches for 282 yards and two touchdowns last season. Thomas has potential, but these injuries have to be worrisome for Denver. The Broncos want to see dividends from the No. 22 overall pick last season. Former Denver coach Josh McDaniels bypassed Dallas’ Dez Bryant to take Thomas last year.

The decision didn’t pay off in 2010 and now it appears Thomas may face another delay in showing his worth in 2011.

That’s all for today.
