Broncos looking for immediate help for Manning

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) The Denver Broncos are building around new quarterback Peyton Manning with the immediate future in mind. No three-year plans, no long-term solutions, no projects. Not anymore.

Manning is 36 and coming off a season in which he had more neck operations (four) than passes (zero), and after committing $96 million to the league’s only four-time MVP, the Broncos need to do everything they can to see to it that their investment pays immediate dividends.

They lured a number of free agents after winning the Manning sweepstakes and now it’s time to augment those additions through the draft.

They own the 25th pick in each of the first three rounds along with four picks on Saturday, three of which they received for trading receiver Brandon Lloyd and quarterback Tim Tebow.

Their biggest need is at defensive tackle, a position they’ve historically neglected in the draft and one which grew in importance when Brodrick Bunkley bolted for New Orleans in free agency and Ryan McBean saw his tender rescinded after he received a six-game drug suspension from the NFL.

Two players who could be there for the taking at No. 25 are Jerel Worthy of Michigan State and Devon Still of Penn State.

”We don’t feel as bad about our tackles as everybody else does,” said Broncos boss John Elway. ”I think that we feel OK there and Ty Warren will be back coming off an injury and (Kevin) Vickerson is coming back and then we have some young guys in there that we feel like we’ll be OK. It’s not nearly the need in our minds that people think it is.”

Whether that’s a smoke screen or not, there are plenty of quality defensive tackles available in this year’s class, so the Broncos might be tempted to add another playmaker on offense, such as Rutgers wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, with their top pick Thursday night.

Elway said Monday that he wouldn’t mind trading down, which could take the Broncos into the second round Friday evening before they make their first selection.

Either way, the Broncos’ draft approach has been altered by two significant developments in the offseason that changed their style on both sides of the ball: the signing of Manning, who was cut by the Colts, and the addition of Jack Del Rio, the former Jacksonville head coach who became Denver’s seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons.

”If you look at where we were and where we are, the offensive mindset is a little bit different than it was. That is going to change the type of people that we are looking at offensively,” Elway said. ”Defensively, nothing has changed other than the fact that we’ve gotten to know Jack Del Rio and the type of people he likes and the style that he is going to play.”

What makes Denver’s draft plans difficult to decipher is this: Elway subscribes to the ”best player available” philosophy, explaining, ”You have a lot more misses in my mind when you draft to need.”

The biggest question facing Elway, general manager Brian Xanders and coach John Fox is this: do they best help Manning by adding playmakers on offense or is it more prudent to build up the defense to take pressure off their new QB?

The answer could shift throughout the three-day draft.

”I think the bottom line is we want to do the best thing to surround him with a team that’s going to give him an opportunity to win,” Elway said. ”We can go in with an idea of what we would like to do, but that changes as players come off the board. It’s always fluid.”

He compared it to when he used to go into kickoff with a game plan that quickly changed.

”Obviously, there are guys that we have pinpointed and like, but you never know where they’re going to go and when they’re going to be there,” Elway said.

Whether it was Mike Shanahan in charge or Josh McDaniels or the current regime, the Broncos have always been one of the busiest teams when it comes to draft-day trades, their dizzying deals netting them players or picks they covet.

And this draft might be no different.

”We’re open,” Elway said, clearly signaling to the league’s other 31 teams that he’s willing to listen to anyone’s pitch. ”I think that preferably, we’d like to go back. If there is somebody that likes somebody at our position at No. 25, we’re fine there, but we’re always open to go either way.”

The Broncos are hoping to get three starters out of this year’s draft.

”Any time you go into a draft, you think your first and second picks, even into the third round, are going to come in and have an impact on your football team,” Elway said.

”We’re talking about now,” Elway stressed. ”Impact doesn’t necessarily mean a starter, but one that can come in and help us win. I think that’s kind of where we are right now.”

Denver’s defense enjoyed a renaissance last year with the addition of Defensive Player of the Year Von Miller and the return of sack specialist Elvis Dumervil, but their secondary was exposed by elite quarterbacks such as Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford, who piled up points on the Broncos.

Although Elway was reluctant for competitive purposes to speak about specific needs, cornerback is clearly another priority for the Broncos, who signed Tracy Porter to a one-year deal in free agency and spoke to the Philadelphia Eagles about Asante Samuel.

”But, you’re only as good as your pass rush, too,” Elway said. ”You have to combine both of those. Obviously, our pass rush is better than it’s been, but we have to get better when people spread us out.”

Brian Dawkins Retires: 'Major Press…

Read More: Brian Dawkins (S – DEN), Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos safety Brian Dawkins has announced his retirement from the NFL, but don’t expect the team to let this fade away in the lead up to the 2012 NFL Draft later this week. We should expect a press conference in the next day or two, reports the Denver Post’s Mike Klis:

This news shouldn’t change how the Broncos approach the draft at the end of the week. The team already brought in Mike Adams through free agency to shore up the safety position. Also, the Broncos have been expected to draft a safety at some point in proceedings because Dawkins’ retirement — either this season, as it turned out, or one year later — has been a topic of discussion since the end of the 2011 season.

The Denver Broncos Go Digital for the 2012 Season:…

Every football season, teams create and print out playbooks for each of the players, coaches and other personnel. Players and coaches spend hours in the locker rooms going over game videos. However, this year, the Denver Broncos are looking to change all of this and take a step into the digital world.

For the 2012 NFL season, the Broncos have decided to toss out the traditional playbooks and instead turn to iPads. They will be able to have their game plans, video clips and anything else they may need right in their hands. If Broncos coach John Fox adds a new play, the players will not have to wait for a meeting and their new page. It will now be able to be uploaded immediately.

Traditionally, players would take notes on their weekly playbooks but when the week was over, many of these notes went out the window. These new tablets will allow the players to make notes and highlight certain plays and their information will be retained each week.

Personally, as a tech geek, I think this is a great idea. However, when I first read about it, I did have one concern. A tablet that holds all the plays and secrets of a team would be a huge target for other teams. Playbooks are protected just as fiercely off the field as the ball is on the field. What happens if a player leaves that tablet behind somewhere?

The answer to that is simple and it actually makes the new tablets and their secrets more secure than the old paper playbooks. If a player loses their new tablet, the information on the tablet can be deleted from a remote location via the Verizon’s LTE network.

The Broncos will be the third team in the NFL to make a turn to the digital world. Currently, the Baltimore Ravens and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only other teams using tablet and digital technology. However, I don’t think that will be the case for long. The company that created the PlayerLync app that is being used is in talks with other NFL teams as well.

While I think the biggest difference this season for the Broncos will be the addition of Peyton Manning, it will be interesting to see how these tablets make a difference too. As a fan, I can only hope that these tablets and their internet access will give the players an opportunity to hit Twitter more often and share more updates.

Ben Garland Gets Approval from Air Force to Rejoin…

Do you remember the story about the Air Force officer who might have made the 2010 Denver Broncos team if not for his five-year active duty commitment? Well that story has a twist to it that could affect the Broncos in 2012. Ben Garland just received his release from active duty in the Air Force and he’s heading to Denver to begin training with the Broncos.

What is Garland’s story?

Ben Garland played on the defensive line for the Air Force Academy from 2006-2010. He made second-team All-Mountain West Conference in his senior year when he had 4.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. Despite being undrafted, Garland spent some weeks training with the Broncos before he was required to report for active duty later that summer. Garland was set to start pilot training but requested reassignment in 2011. As pilot training is a 10-year commitment, Garland needed a different career path if he was to take advantage of a possible return to the NFL. That path turned out to be in public affairs.

Garland is able now to utilize an Air Force program that will allow him to turn the remainder of his active duty commitment (three years) into a six-year reserve commitment in public affairs if he signs a contract with the Denver Broncos. Other military members that have been allowed to play in the NFL in lieu of active duty include WR Chad Hall (Philadelphia Eagles in 2011) and DB Caleb Campbell (Kansas City Chiefs in 2011).

Why did he return to the Broncos and not another team?

Josh McDaniels, the head coach for the Broncos at the time, placed Garland on the military/reserve list before the beginning of pre-season in 2010. That meant that the Broncos reserved the rights to Garland until he finished his commitment. It was a no-brainer of a move back in 2010 as Garland clearly wanted to return to the NFL some day. It didn’t count toward the roster, and it claimed a football player who could potentially contribute to the team some day.

Can he make an impact in Denver?

Stories abound of Garland’s effort and drive in his short time with the Broncos in 2010. He’s a 6’5″ lineman who apparently outran Tim Tebow regularly in post-practice sprints. He’s also playing a position (defensive tackle) where depth is an issue. If he can get himself a spot on the roster, fans will most certainly love rooting for this underdog.

Denver Broncos 2012 Draft Preview

Despite bringing in a 36-year-old Peyton Manning to take
over at quarterback, the Broncos’ focus in this draft will predominantly be
about getting younger. Age is a particular worry in the middle of the
defensive line, where two prominent members of the rotation (Ty Warren, Justin
Bannan) are on the down side of their careers and Warren has missed the last
two seasons due to injuries, so most insiders expect Denver to use its No. 25
overall pick on the best interior tackle that’s still standing. Leading rusher
Willis McGahee enjoyed a career renaissance for the reigning AFC West champs
last year, but the 30-year-old has considerable tread on his tires and 2009
first-rounder Knowshon Moreno seems to have fallen out of favor with the
current coaching staff, which makes a running back with fresh legs a potential
priority for the new Manning-led offense. The Broncos, who picked up a second
fourth-round choice in the trade of popular quarterback Tim Tebow to the Jets,
also seek a future building block at cornerback and are short on quality
reserves on the offensive line, while a more talented alternative to backup
quarterback Caleb Hanie also may be found out of the rookie ranks.

2011 Record: 8-8

Top Needs: DT, RB, OL

First Three Picks: No. 25, No. 57, No. 87

Number of Selections: 7 (1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6)

RECENT FIRST ROUND HISTORY: 2011 – Von Miller (LB, Texas A&M); 2010 -
Demaryius Thomas (WR, Georgia Tech), Tim Tebow (QB, Florida); 2009 – Knowshon
Moreno (RB, Georgia), Robert Ayers (DE, Tennessee); 2008 – Ryan Clady (T,
Boise State); 2007 – Jarvis Moss (DE, Florida); 2006 – Jay Cutler (QB,
Vanderbilt); 2005 – none; 2004 – D.J. Williams (OLB, Miami-Florida); 2003 -
George Foster (OT, Georgia).

NFL Mock Draft: Denver Broncos & AFC West

By: Tony Meale

The 2012 NFL Draft is just one week away so we’ve pulled together a mock draft featuring the first and second rounds for the NFC East. Do you agree with the picks? Comment below.

AFC West

Broncos

I still have no idea why acquiring Peyton Manning meant the Broncos had to trade Tim Tebow. If Manning and John Elway wanted to avoid the sideshow and hoopla, okay. But last time I checked, Denver loves Tebow – and Manning is 36. Couldn’t Tebow have stuck around and learned a thing or two from old No. 18? Or, I don’t know, contributed on offense? It’s not like Denver is saturated at the skill positions. Tebow would have been a stellar goal-line back, short-yardage specialist or even a tight end.

Oh well.

Denver, which has seven picks (two via trading Tebow to the Jets), selects 25th in both the first and second rounds. While the Broncos certainly possess some elite pass-rushers, they could use some help at defensive tackle. Penn State’s Devon Still and Michigan State’s Jerel Worthy are both worthy of first-round consideration.

if Denver doesn’t go defense with its first pick, it’ll likely go offensive line or wide receiver. The Broncos’ line was solid last year, but there’s no such thing as too much depth when you’re talking about protecting perhaps the greatest quarterback of all time. Wisconsin’s Peter Konz would be a worthy addition.

Adding wideout Andre Caldwell from the Bengals will help Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, but Denver needs another pass-catcher or two (or three or four). Baylor’s Kendall Wright is an explosive player, as is Georgia Tech’s Stephen Hill. And we all know how much Peyton loves his tight ends. Stanford’s Coby Fleener will likely be available.

Given the overall mediocrity of the AFC West, Denver is the no-brainer favorite to win the division. Whether the Broncos do much beyond that, however, may hinge on giving Manning more toys and shoring up the trenches.

Chargers

The Chargers have eight picks – one in each of the first six rounds and two in the seventh – and should use six or seven of these picks on defense.

Yes, Philip Rivers lost big-play threat Vincent Jackson, but Antonio Gates, Malcolm Floyd and Vincent Brown all return. San Diego also signed Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal, so moving the ball through the air shouldn’t be an issue. As for the ground, leading rusher Ryan Matthews (1,500+ total yards, 4.9 YPC) will be primed for the feature role. Aside from adding depth at offensive tackle, San Diego’s biggest needs are defensive.

The Bob Sanders signing was a bust, so the Chargers may make the secondary a priority. If so, they’ll likely target Mark Barron, Dre Kirkpatrick, Stephon Gilmore or maybe even Janoris Jenkins. If they don’t go secondary first, outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw and defensive end Quinton Coples are prime possibilities.

Bottom line? The Chargers have become the Cowboys of the AFC. Lot of talent, lot of potential; no results.

San Diego is running out of excuses. To say it’s “playoffs or bust” in 2012 is an understatement.

Chiefs

Kansas City’s aerial attack was embarrassing to, well, the game of football last year, but drafting a quarterback isn’t the answer. A healthy Matt Cassel, Jamaal Charles and Tony Moeaki should do the trick. In fact, a healthy Eric Berry – not to mention the addition of Peyton Hillis – could catapult the Chiefs into the division race.

KC’s biggest needs are in the trenches. So the Chiefs’ first pick – 11th overall – should be spent on a guard (think Stanford’s David DeCastro) or a nose tackle (think Memphis’ Dontari Poe). It might be wise for them to draft DeCastro and then wait on another nose tackle like Josh Chapman or Alameda Ta’amu.

Now, back to quarterback. If the Chiefs think Matt Cassel is their guy, they should stick with him. They brought in Brady Quinn as a backup should Cassel succumb to injury, but Brady Quinn shouldn’t be anybody’s guy. I’m not opposed to the Chiefs rolling the dice on someone like Brandon Weeden. His age and experience would help if Cassel goes down; then again, will Weeden be content sitting for a year – or longer – given that he is already 28?

A lot needs to happen for KC to be considered a dangerous team; that said, the Chiefs are closer than you think.

Raiders

If one non-losing team from 2011 will have a losing season in 2012, I’m predicting it’ll be Oakland. The Raiders, which lost six of ten and four of five to close the season, released or lost to free agency numerous players, including Michael Bush. Carson Palmer is their quarterback, and they have only five picks in the draft – none within the first two rounds.

Oakland has several needs, most notably at linebacker. Top potential options at Pick 95 include Miami’s Sean Spence, Florida State’s Nigel Bradham and TCU’s Tank Carder. After linebacker, the Raiders should do what they can to improve the secondary and offensive line, but due to the trade for Carson Palmer, their hands are a little tied.

Every other team in the AFC West has gotten – or will get – better before the start of next season. Will Oakland?

It’s doubtful.

Man tries out to be Denver Broncos cheerleader

Denver Broncos Cheerleaders tryouts draw hundreds…

Many dream of becoming an NFL cheerleader, and on Sunday, more than 200 ladies – and one man – got the opportunity to make those dreams one step closer to reality.

Sunday was the first round of the 2012 Denver Broncos Cheerleaders and Denver Outlaws Cheerleaders tryouts. Just like every year, it was a grueling few hours of learning routines, practicing and auditioning in front of a panel of judges.

There were several veteran Denver Broncos Cheerleaders returning this year that have to tryout just like everyone else, and of course there were many newcomers.

One young man from Denver, Sacha Heppell, made it his mission to get on the team. Watch the video above to see how he did.

Peyton Manning Working Every Day with New Denver…

Peyton Manning has wasted no time meeting and greeting his new teammates in Denver since he was signed by the Broncos three weeks ago. Since he arrived in Denver, Manning has apparently spent most of his time in the Denver area working with several wide receivers and offensive lineman.

Of course, the fact that one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time is here in Denver and working hard on his game with the rest of the offense in the off-season still isn’t good enough for that subset of Broncos fans that may never get over the fact that Tebow is no longer here. They still have two criticisms of the situation. One is that they believe that Manning is still not totally healthy (and may never be). The second issue they bring up is that they believe that he’s going to get hurt the first time he gets hit next season.

Now, while Manning may not still be up to the physical standards that he holds himself to, it seems that many others think he’s ready to go. Wide receiver Eric Decker, who apparently has been working with Manning constantly for the past three weeks, has gone on record saying that Manning can make all the throws already. Now given who used to throw to Decker, the wide receiver’s comments may not 100% represent the situation, but it’s certainly highly encouraging.

As to the idea that Manning is now a china doll, I’m getting a little sick of this particular argument. When the statement comes from someone who maintains that he is a Tebow fan, it sounds petty. Manning didn’t get “injured.” It wasn’t as if he got hurt in a game or practice from a tackle or a sack. One prominent neurosurgeon has come out and said that the area in his neck that had the neck fusion may be stronger than the rest of his neck. The only concern from the doctors is if his arm strength can come back fully, and it sounds (from Decker) like that has come along very well and we’re still five months away from Week 1.

Manning isn’t giving these Tebow fans anything that they can criticize in a rational way (then again, Tebow fans are not terribly well-known for their rational thinking). He’s kept his head down, stayed out of the news, and has been working hard. In his three weeks here, I’ve only heard him on the local radio once, but I have heard several Broncos on the radio discuss Manning come to town and how excited that they are. Even today, long snapper Lonnie Paxton was on the Les and JoJo show on today discussing how most of the team are reporting early for the beginning of the off-season program (due to start next week) and are showing an excitement that they haven’t had in a while. He also talked about how Manning is constantly talking football to the receivers and lineman in the locker room.

For fans like me that want football players to be all about football, Manning is a dream come true. In contrast to the circus that surrounded Tebow (even now he’s making more waves because of his religious beliefs rather than working on his football skills), Manning makes everything about football. From everything I’ve heard and read, Manning’s recovery already puts him close to where he used to be. Give him another five months, and he will come in better and stronger.

Julie has been an avid NFL fan her entire life, and became a Broncos fan when she moved to Denver in 2001. She reluctantly embraced Tebow when he found some success, but was happy to kick him to the curb when Manning signed. She is eagerly awaiting the regular season.

Is Peyton Manning Ready for the 2012 Season and…

After QB Tim Tebow led the Denver Broncos to the playoffs in 2011, as a fan, I thought for sure Tebow would have the honor of being the starting QB for the 2012 season. Of course, then Peyton Manning became available and the Broncos traded the one that had led them to victory for one that had sat on the sidelines for the entire 2011 season.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love Manning and think that he was an amazing QB for the Indianapolis Colts. He is one of the greatest QBs in the NFL. However, I am also someone that has had back surgery and, given the fact Manning has had numerous surgeries, I was a bit concerned that we were trading for someone that would just never be the QB he used to be. I was concerned that come game time, Manning just wouldn’t be up for it and we would be left with no one at QB.

I can’t say that I am not still a bit concerned. We have yet to start the season and Manning has yet to play a game where another team’s defense is looking to take him down. I am still concerned that one bad hit will find him back on the bench indefinitely. I was also concerned that the nerves in his arm had not regained what was needed to throw the ball on a regular basis.

However, I am a bit encouraged by words from Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker who has been working out with Manning. Decker recently told ESPN that, “The guy’s still throwing the ball a long time, throwing it great, hitting you in the right spot.”

Decker went on to say, “He’s such a perfectionist. If he hits you in the belly button, he gets mad at himself for not hitting you in the chest. It’s unbelievable to be around a guy who has those standards for himself.”

To have Decker say things like this gives me hope that Manning will be able to once again be the QB he used to be. It gives me hope that my Broncos may just be Super Bowl bound this year. However, despite the hope, there is still concern. We will just have to see where the season takes us.

Denver Broncos coach John Fox adds reinforcements…

PALM BEACH, Fla. John Fox will be coming back to Charlotte this season, and he will bring a future first-ballot NFL Hall-of-Fame quarterback with him.

This time, Fox will man the sideline as coach of the Denver Broncos.

During his nine years with the Carolina Panthers, Fox’s quarterbacks formed a forgettable list that included Chris Weinke, Rodney Peete, Randy Fasani, 44-year-old Vinny Testaverde, Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen.

Fox made it to the Super Bowl with Jake Delhomme in 2003, but he has never had a quarterback like he has in Denver, following the Broncos’ win in the Peyton Manning Sweepstakes.

And no, don’t expect Fox to run draws on third-and-long. Or more to the point, don’t expect Manning to let him.

“I think he’ll have some ideas” on the Broncos’ offense, Fox said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings.

Then he laughed. Fox , and everyone associated with the Broncos, is in good spirits these days.

During a wild, 48-hour span last week, the Broncos signed the most notable free agent in NFL history and traded one of the most polarizing figures in sport.

Hello Peyton, good-bye Tim Tebow.

“I guess I attempted a vertical (leap), but you couldn’t have slipped a paper underneath it,” Fox said of his reaction to Manning’s call informing the Broncos he was Denver-bound.

“It was very exciting,” Fox said. “Having been in recruiting a long, long time ago … it’s always exciting to get a player of that caliber.”

Fox, who is always cautious with the media, drew a big crowd of reporters Tuesday morning at the AFC coaches’ breakfast at the Breakers Resort.

Fox detailed Denver’s pursuit of Manning, who worked out at Duke with Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe, his quarterbacks coach in college at Tennessee. Fox and John Elway, the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations, flew to Durham to watch Manning throw.

Manning, who has had four neck procedures during the past two years, showed Fox and Elway enough to convince the Broncos to sign the 36-year-old to a five-year, $96 million deal.

“He said in our press conference, and he’s right, he could play tomorrow. But he’s not where he wants to be at this point,” Fox said. “I’ve got a lot of guys rehabbing in our locker room from injuries a year ago. So it’s very common in late March, early April in this league to have guys rehabbing and getting healthy for the season. And he’s on that list.”

Teams’ offseason programs don’t begin until April 16. Under the terms of the new collective-bargaining agreement, coaches can’t oversee on-field activities until May.

But Fox said that’s plenty of time for Manning to get familiar with a scheme that will change dramatically from the spread offense Fox and former Panthers offensive coordinator Mike McCoy installed after Tebow took over for Kyle Orton in Week 7 last season.

Tebow led Denver to a series of fourth-quarter comebacks as the Broncos made the playoffs in Fox’s first season.

“I thought our staff, our players, our team did a great job adjusting to Tim Tebow’s strengths. I’m sure our players, our staff, will do a great job adjusting to Peyton Manning’s strengths,” Fox said. “It’ll be quite a bit different. I thought last year’s (offense) was effective and I expect this year’s to be effective.”

Manning, who won four most valuable player awards and a Super Bowl during 14 seasons in Indianapolis, called his own plays with the Colts. Fox indicated Manning would be given the same latitude in Denver.

“I think he’ll raise all boats on our offense. It doesn’t matter whether it’s players or coaches,” Fox said. “We know his M.O. He’s a general out there, does a great job and we’re looking forward to him doing that to our offense.”

Fox still has a house at Quail Hollow and returns frequently to see his three sons. One of Fox’s sons lives in Charlotte; the other two attend Elon.

Still, Fox said it would be odd returning to Bank of America Stadium.

“It’s always weird going to back to your (old) place. I’ve done it a bunch of times, whether it was New York or you name it,” said Fox, who was let go after a lame-duck, 2-14 season in 2010.

“But at the end of the day, it’ll be another game. It’ll be a trip I look forward to, and look forward to the trip home (to Denver) better if we win.”

Why Peyton Manning Will Love Denver

Why Peyton Manning Will Love Denver

Peyton Manning’s announcement last week that he signed with the Denver Broncos put an end to the epic speculation about the free agent’s future. Sports strategy aside—such as the pull of Broncos executive and famed quarterback John Elway—Manning has a lot to look forward to in his new home. Here’s Forbes Travel Guide’s take on why the beloved athlete (and his family) will love Denver:

There’s a hearty restaurant scene.

Denver is known for its steakhouses, serving up cuts of beef well suited for an all-star athlete. Manning was already treated to a round of applause at Denver’s location of chain Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse recently, and we bet he’ll be checking out Elway’s (quarterback legend John Elway’s steakhouse) soon. Should he want to skip the steaks, the city offers fine dining, including the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Restaurant Kevin Taylor, which serves contemporary cuisine that melds French, Southwest and Asian influences in an elegant dining room. Another good game plan? The more casual Fruition is an intimate restaurant—right for the famously private Mannings—focusing on comfort food (think English pea bisque, pasta carbonara and Maple Leaf Farms duck breast) made with ingredients from the restaurant’s farm.

It’s a family-friendly city.

Manning has toddler twins, and the Mile High city offers plenty for them to do as they grow up. The Denver Zoo spans 80 acres in City Park—just east of downtown—and is home to more than 3,500 animals. The Mannings can check out the seven-acre Primate Panorama or stop by the 22,000-square-foot Tropical Discovery, a glass-enclosed rainforest exhibit with caves, cliffs, waterfalls and a chance to see animals such as Komodo dragons and exotic turtles.

The Children’s Museum of Denver has two floors—24,000 square feet—of interactive exhibits. Kids can encase themselves in a giant soapy bubble in the Bubble Booth, or play in the real fire truck, donning protective gear, using a fire hose and practicing calling 911.

Outdoor activities abound.

There’s no denying that Colorado’s mountain landscape is a step up from the scenery of Indianapolis, where Manning spent 14 seasons. The quarterback plays golf, so he can make use of greens including Cherry Hills Country Club—about a 20-minute drive south of downtown Denver—a private course with 18 holes that will host the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship and 2014 BMW Championship. The Country Club at Castle Pines in Castle Rock—30 minutes south of Denver—has a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, with 600 feet of elevation changes and varied terrain to challenge the Super Bowl MVP.

And the Rocky Mountains offer plenty to see off the golf course—if he’s looking for an off-field workout, Manning can take in a hike in nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. This 416-square-mile park is home to alpine lakes, 60 mountains taller than 12,000 feet and wildlife including bighorn sheep and elk. In the off-season, Manning can take the family to Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star The Broadmoor resort—home of three championship golf courses and near activities such as white water rafting and fly-fishing.

Denver Broncos Sign Caleb Hanie

Read More: Peyton Manning (QB – DEN), Brady Quinn (QB – DEN), Caleb Hanie (QB – CHI), Tim Tebow (QB – NYJ), Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos

This week, the Denver Broncos signed Peyton Manning and traded Tim Tebow. Brady Quinn had departed Denver earlier in the offseason. As John Elway put it, they do not have a ‘Plan B.’ Well, now they do. A former Chicago Bears backup quarterback will be joining Denver to back up Manning.

The former Colorado State QB is best known for his performance in the 2010 NFC Championship Game. When both Jay Cutler and Todd Collins came out of the game injured, Hanie performed well to keep the Bears in the game against the Green Bay Packers. Otherwise, Hanie has struggled. He started three games last season after Jay Cutler broke his thumb, but was replaced by Josh McCown in Week 16. Hanie currently has three touchdown passes and 10 interceptions in his NFL career.
