Denver Broncos Injury Update: Robery Ayers…

Read More: Elvis Dumervil (DE – DEN), Robert Ayers (DE – DEN), Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos were forced inside of the practice bubble on Wednesday due to the first major snow of the year in Colorado. As expected, Elvis Dumervil was not practicing during the open media session of the day, reports Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post. Dumervil’s fellow starting defensive end, Robert Ayers, is practicing despite banging up his knee during Sunday’s victory over the Dolphins.

Dumervil, however, hurt his ankle, and was seen with it heavily taped. It would be a surprise if he plays on Sunday, and if he doesn’t practice on Thursday it’s probable that he will be declared out on Friday. Jason Hunter would take Dumervil’s spot on the defensive line, as he did earlier in the season when a shoulder injury kept the 2009 sack leader out.

Denver Broncos eyeing … Detroit Lions

Detroit at Denver, 2:05 p.m., Sunday, Sports Authority Field at Mile High; KDVR-31

For the record: Detroit 5-2, second place in NFC North; Denver 2-4, last place in AFC West.

Last game: The Lions lost their second straight game, 23-16 at home against the Falcons.

Who’s hot: Wide receiver Calvin Johnson has scored 10 touchdowns in seven games, four more scores than the next-highest receiver, New England’s Wes Welker. Johnson also ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards with 679.

Who’s not: The Lions’ running game took a major hit when Jahvid Best suffered a concussion Oct. 16 in a loss to the 49ers, and the offense has struggled because of it. Sunday’s loss to Atlanta marked Detroit’s worst offensive day of the season, with QB Matthew Stafford throwing for only 183 yards and the team failing to score a touchdown in two tries in the red zone.

Key stat: The Lions have a plus-10 turnover margin, best in the NFL, in large part because of Stafford, who has thrown only four interceptions in seven games. He has thrown 16 touchdowns, tied for third with Tom Brady, behind only Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees. That’s pretty good company.

FYI: The Broncos are 6-4 all time against Detroit. The Lions won the teams’ last meeting 44-7 at Detroit in 2007.

Coachspeak: “When we look back at this, we’re going to see three or four opportunities that if we’d have capitalized on them things would look a lot different.” — Detroit coach Jim Schwartz, after Sunday’s loss to the Falcons

Denver Broncos Injury Report: Broncos Have All 53…

Read More: Brian Dawkins (S – DEN), Willis McGahee (RB – DEN), Eddie Royal (WR – DEN), Demaryius Thomas (WR – DEN), Julius Thomas (TE – DEN), Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos had all 53 men on the active roster participate on Thursday, the second time that has happened all season long. Only Willis McGahee saw a downgrade from full participation to limited. However, that should not be considered a sign that McGahee has a nagging back issue. According to Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post, McGahee was limited so he could receive rest.

McGahee turns 30 on Oct. 21 and he has shouldered much of the rushing load this season while Knowshon Moreno battled injury and general ineffectiveness.

Brian Dawkins looks more and more likely to play even with a neck injury impacting his play. Tight end Julius Thomas hasn’t played since Week 2 when he suffered a high-ankle sprain.

Here is the injury report through Thursday:

Name  Pos. Injury  Wed.  Thu.
Brian Dawkins S  Head/Neck  LP  FP
Willis McGahee RB  Back  FP  LP
Eddie Royal WR  Groin  FP  FP
Julius Thomas TE  Ankle  LP  LP
Demaryius Thomas WR  Finger  FP  FP

Ryan McBean Arrested for Stalking: Denver Broncos…

Denver Broncos tackle Ryan McBean was arrested on charges of stalking last Friday.

Denver Broncos tackle Ryan McBean was arrested on charges of stalking last Friday.

Denver Broncos defensive tackle Ryan McBean was arrested Friday on charges of stalking in Denver, Colo. according to a Denver Post report that cites the Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.

McBean posted a $50,000 bond over the weekend and is set to appear in court on Oct. 28.

McBean’s arrest came during the Broncos NFL bye week, which means he definitely spent his free time well. He participated in the Broncos’ meetings and practice Monday, even as Broncos head coach John Fox said the team was “aware” of McBean’s arrest. The team is gearing up for quarterback Tim Tebow’s debut as its starting quarterback this Sunday.

“We’ll let the legal process run its course, but at this point, we’re gathering information and, hopefully, the facts,” Fox told The Denver Post in the typical “Let’s be aware, but vague” statement organizations usually give following the arrest of one of their players.

McBean joins kicker Matt Prater as Broncos that have had brushes with the law this season and have been arrested. Prater was charged with a DUI in early August, when the Broncos were in the midst of training camp. Prater has not missed any games this season.

McBean has recorded eight tackles and one sack in the Broncos’ five games this season. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2007 NFL Draft.

His Wikipedia page says that McBean is “widely considered as one of the NFL’s happiest players.” Without citation.

Report: Broncos in talks to deal Lloyd

Updated Oct 14, 2011 1:55 AM ET

The Denver Broncos have been in talks with three or four NFL teams who have expressed an interest in a trade for Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, The Denver Post reported Thursday, citing sources.

The Broncos are reportedly seeking anything from a third- to fifth-round draft pick in return ahead of next Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Tennessee and Carolina are believed to be among the teams interested.

The sources said the fact Lloyd will be a free agent after this season was one of “multiple” factors that have seen him placed on the trading block.

The Broncos also have depth in the position, with Demaryius Thomas and Eddie Royal due to return after this weekend, while the team is set to shift to a more run-oriented offense with Tim Tebow taking over from Kyle Orton at quarterback.

Lloyd, 30 and in his ninth NFL season, led the NFL last season with 1,448 yards, and had 11 touchdowns. This season he has 19 receptions for 283 yards and no touchdowns.

Tebow time arrives in second half for Denver…

Lindsay H. Jones, The Denver Post

At 4:07 p.m. Sunday, the people got what they wanted: Tim Tebow.

Broncos coach John Fox benched starter Kyle Orton after a disastrous first half against the San Diego Chargers, opting instead for the people’s favorite quarterback, 2010 first-round draft pick Tebow.

The crowd at Sports Authority Field at Mile High rose in unison as Tebow ran onto the field for his first series as the team’s quarterback — not as a gimmick player or a decoy wide receiver.

Tebow led the Broncos on two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Chargers. Tebow’s Hail Mary pass with time expired failed to connect in the end zone, sealing the Broncos’ 29-24 loss.

With the team at 1-4 and heading

into the bye week, Fox after the game would not speculate on who would start the Broncos’ next game Oct. 23 at Miami.

It was clear, though, whom the fans wanted. Fans huddled around the tunnel, cheering as every Broncos player ran off the field Sunday evening, with none receiving louder applause than Tebow.

That’s all the news for today.

Florence’s Buderus named Broncos High School Coach…

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos named Florence High School Head Coach Mark Buderus as their NFL High School Coach of the Week.

Buderus led his No. 1-ranked Huskies of the Class 2A League to a come-from-behind victory over No. 3 Kent Denver last week. Trailing 20-6 when a 40-minute rain delay ensued, the Huskies came back to score 21 points in the fourth quarter, winning 35-20.

“We took a power nap, then got going,” Buderus said.

Buderus, 52, was born in Fort Collins, Colo., and graduated from Pomona High School in 1977. He received a degree in secondary education from Adams State College in 1981 before earning a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix in 2003. He played quarterback at Pomona and Adams State.

The Denver Broncos will recognize 10 High School Coach of the Week honorees during the regular season. Each weekly winner will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to be used in the school’s football program. Additionally, during the Broncos’ home game on Jan. 1, against Kansas City, the NFL/Denver Broncos High School Coach of the Year will be named and presented with a $2,000 donation to the school’s football program. This year’s selection committee is led by Neil Devlin of the Denver Post and includes Ring of Fame Member Billy Thompson of the Denver Broncos and Andy Lindahl of 850 KOA.

Denver Broncos eyeing … Cincinnati Bengals

Bengals vs. Broncos, at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, 2:15 p.m. Sunday, KCNC-4

Andy Dalton (Getty Images file photo)

For the record: Bengals (1-0) are tied for first in AFC North. Broncos (0-1) are tied for last in AFC West.

Last game: Cincinnati won its season opener 27-17 at Cleveland.

Who’s hot: Nothing helps a rookie quarterback, in this case Andy Dalton, more than a strong running game. Cedric Benson provided that in Week 1, rushing 25 times for 121 yards and one touchdown.

Who’s not: Dalton, who led TCU to a Rose Bowl victory and 13-0 record last season, and backup Bruce Gradkowski were more efficient than dazzling in the Bengals’ season opener against the Browns.

Key stat: The Bengals’ offensive line allowed four sacks in the opener. Their defense made two sacks.

FYI: Dalton injured his forearm near the end of the first half. According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, he likely will play against the Broncos.

Coachspeak: “We need to get off to a good start. We’ve got one step in that direction, because then the schedule swings back our way. We play some games at home at the end of the season. To get another win on the road this weekend, (against) another AFC team, would be huge.” — Bengals coach Marvin Lewis

Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd hopes Denver Broncos’…

Veteran wide receiver Brandon Lloyd had a career-best season (77 catches for 1,448 yards) last year, when the Broncos’ running game struggled.
(Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post
)

If things go right, less could turn out to be more this season for Broncos wide receiver Brandon Lloyd.

Lloyd, who led the NFL with 1,448 receiving yards last season, finished 2010 with a career-best 77 receptions.

But to get those 77, a breakdown of game video showed the Broncos had to target Lloyd more than twice that many times — 157 in all.

As he waits to see how defenses choose to defend him this season, Lloyd is hopeful an enhanced Denver running game will enable the team’s passing attack to be more efficient.

“We’re going to run the ball and make it work,” Lloyd said. “Adding that dimension to our offense might change things up, but I don’t have any expectations.

“Having that threat of a run, a lot of our plays we made last year were against a corner and a safety (on Lloyd). Being able to get one-on-one would definitely enhance what we do, where we don’t have to take so many shots to get the desired result.”

As his best season unfolded, Lloyd saw increasingly more double coverage. Last year, the Raiders — the Broncos’ season-opening opponent tonight — held him to one and four catches in the two meetings.

“I have no idea how people will line up,” Lloyd said. “It’s one of those things where you go through the first few weeks of the season, just kind of feel it out. Because there’s going to be a new dynamic to our offense, we’re going to be able to run the ball.”

Shutterbug.

Von Miller was tinkering, owner’s manual in hand, with a new digital camera last week.

Denver’s rookie outside linebacker from Texas A&M said he hopes to chronicle his first year in the NFL in photos and assemble them in some kind of documentary format on a website, possibly the NFL’s, at some point this season.

Miller, an avid user of social media, especially Twitter, said he did a similar project in his last season at Texas A&M.

“I enjoy it and want to have some things to remember everything,” Miller said.

“Very poised.”

First-year Raiders coach Hue Jackson, who has been an offensive coordinator for the Redskins, Falcons and Raiders, was asked last week about Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton.

“I think he’s a very poised quarterback,” Jackson said. “He’s a good player. He knows how to distribute the ball to the different players on that team. And he’s been a guy that’s been very accurate with the ball.”

Orton, asked how he graded his performance in his 13 starts last season, said: “Obviously not good enough when you have a (4-12) season like we did as a team. I did some good things and I did some not so good things. I’ve got to be better and whatever it takes to get more wins, that’s what I’ve got to do.”

NFL Roster Cuts Net Denver Broncos CB Jonathan…

Read More: Jonathan Wilhite (CB – NEP), Darcel McBath (S – DEN), Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos added former New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Wilhite to the roster on Sunday, reports the Denver Post. Wilhite is entering his fourth year in the NFL, having primarily played as a reserve for the Patriots. As fourth-round pick, WIlhite started four games as a rookie for New England and intercepted one pass. He doubled that total in 2009 and started eight games.

He’s played the nickelback role, as the Denver Post points out, which could allow the team to shift Champ Bailey out of that role. We’ll see how that goes soon enough.

The Denver Broncos confirmed this moved and announced the corresponding roster move. Safety Darcel McBath, who beat out Kyle McCarthy for a roster spot on Saturday, was waived. McBath was a Josh McDaniels second-round draft pick in 2009

Denver Broncos’ Ty Warren Out 3-4 Months After…

Read More: Ty Warren (DE – DEN), Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos defensive tackle Ty Warren underwent surgery on Monday morning, according to Lindsay H. Jones of the Denver Post. Warren had the operation to fix a partially torn triceps tendon that he injured in practice last week. The Broncos are optimistic that he will be able to return in 3-4 months, either in later November or in December.

Warren signed a two-year, $8 million contract after the New England Patriots released. He was expected to be a starter at defensive tackle, but now he and Marcus Thomas are out (Thomas just for the preseason with a strained pectoral muscle).

While Warren could return this season, the Broncos could ultimately decide to place him on the injured reserve list at some point later this year. Warren has had a history of injuries and played in just one regular season game and one postseason game in 2010. A hip injury ended his 2010 season.

Broncos’ Marcus Thomas: ‘I Feel Like This Defense…

Read More: Marcus Thomas (DT – DEN), Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos defensive tackle Marcus Thomas started the team’s first preseason game after the first depth chart release had him as a backup to Kevin Vickerson. Thomas is certainly feeling more comfortable now that he is back in 4-3 defensive scheme. Thomas has said as much recently (via Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post):

“Every year (with the Broncos) it seemed like I was trying to learn a new system, learn something new,” said Thomas, who made 30 starts and 14 sacks at Florida. “You try to keep doing the things they want you to and contribute. I feel like this defense suits me and the things I can do.”

Thomas joined the Broncos in 2007 and went through a number of defensive coordinators, including Bob Slowik, Mike Nolan and Don Martindale. Head coach John Fox brought in New Orleans Saints defensive backs coach Dennis Allen to serve as his defensive coordinator and Thomas is already gaining some rewards from this hire.

Thomas started all 16 games in 2008, but he became the forgotten man over the two years of the Josh McDaniels regime. If Allen’s defense can provide the stability Thomas needs to excel, the Broncos will benefit across their defensive line. Let’s see what happens over the next few preseason games.

Denver Broncos Rushing Game Looking For Past Glory…

Read More: Willis McGahee (RB – DEN), Knowshon Moreno (RB – DEN), Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are a rushing team looking to reestablish that once dominant ground attack they once had. Under former coach Josh McDaniels, the Broncos moved away from that and had Kyle Orton throw the ball (being down by big numbers also helped that propensity to throw). May we see a return to the days of pounding the ball?

Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post believes that if the Broncos want to win, they will need to rush the ball 500 times this season. The team ran the ball 440 times in 2009 and 398 times in 2010, a 4-10 season. Legwold then breaks down how the Broncos have a winning season almost every time the team has over 500 rushing attempts.

In the first preseason game, we did see a balanced attack between the rush and the pass. Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn combined for 27 pass attempts; Seven players rushed for 30 total carries, though we’ll drop that down to 28 since Tebow made two of those rushes. An improved Knowshon Moreno and new running back Willis McGahee will be at the forefront of this movement.

John Fox is ready to take back the ground offensive and we’ll see that more as the preseason goes on.
