In Tim They Trust

Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos are turning conventional football wisdom on its helmet this season.

In a league dominated by precision passing, Tebow and the Broncos win with the run. NFL teams, on average, are passing on 57 percent of their plays this season. Super Bowl champion Green Bay is throwing on 60 percent of its plays.

Denver is throwing on a league-low 47 percent.

The elite quarterbacks in the NFL are laser-like in their accuracy. New Orleans’ Drew Brees is on pace to set an NFL record for completion percentage, hitting 71.5 percent of his passes. The Packers’ Aaron Rodgers, the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, seemingly could throw a football through the eye of a needle, blindfolded and wearing handcuffs.

Denver’s Tebow is completing 48.6 percent of his passes, the worst rate in the league. Yet Tebow has produced 15 touchdowns with just two interceptions, and he’s 7-2 as a starter.

Tebow brings his compelling act to Ralph Wilson Stadium today to face the Bills.

Denver (8-6) hopes to clinch the AFC West title. Buffalo aims to end its seven-game losing streak.

The story line of Denver’s season has captivated football fans nationwide: Can Tebow, devout Christian, ultimate All-American role model and late-game savior, lead the Broncos to an improbable playoff berth?

All the while, the football establishment wonders: Can Tebow enjoy long-term success playing quarterback like this?

“He’s not a great thrower of the football, and he’ll never be a great thrower of the football in my estimation, because you’re not going to get him to change,” said former Bengals great Boomer Esiason in a Boston radio interview this week. “And why would you ask him to change, especially with the way he’s been playing the last few weeks in the fourth quarter alone. … I don’t think he’s the long-term solution at quarterback for the Denver Broncos.”

“It’s amazing to watch it,” said former Raiders great Rich Gannon. “It’s not the prettiest thing, but he’s making plays at the end. The throwing concerns you — the inaccuracy.”

It concerns the Broncos’ brain trust, too, which is why coach John Fox has adjusted his team’s style. Denver ranks No. 1 in the league in rushing. John Elway, Broncos executive vice president of football operations, had been non-committal toward Tebow earlier in the season. This week, Elway gave Tebow an endorsement, saying “he’s not going anywhere.”

“We’ve seen, I believe, improvement over the last six games,” said Hall of Famer Troy Aikman in a Sporting News webcast a week ago. “Is that going to be enough? I don’t know. There’s a part of me that still thinks when this season ends, however it ends for the Denver Broncos, that John Fox and John Elway probably are still going to be standing there and saying, ‘I don’t know if this is the guy for us.’‚”

The question, for most former quarterbacks who watch Tebow, centers on how much better the second-year player can get. Ultimately, the Broncos are going to have to expand their passing offense.

Tebow mostly runs a one-read offense. He does not routinely follow a progression across the field in looking for his receivers.

“He has to improve in some of the things that all NFL offenses have to take for granted,” said former Giants great Phil Simms, who will work today’s game for CBS. “That means, looking at the first receiver, and when he’s not open, throw it to the second one. Just get a routine 8-yard completion and let’s move on. I haven’t seen that yet from them.

“They haven’t gotten there,” Simms said. “It’s not that important now, because of how they’ve managed their football team, but it will be important in the future.”

In last week’s 41-23 loss to New England, the Patriots played more man-to-man defense in the second half, and Tebow struggled. Receivers did not get open quickly, and it forced Tebow to make tougher throws into smaller windows. Tebow was 6-of-15 passing in the second half and 11 of 22 overall. The Bills may try the same tactics today — if they can get Denver into passing situations.

Denver is averaging 163 rushing yards a game. Buffalo’s run defense ranks 29th Ñ allowing 139.5 a game.

Former Bills back Willis McGahee needs just 10 yards today to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in rushing for the season. Tebow has rushed for 610 yards, best among all NFL QBs by a yard over Carolina’s Cam Newton. Tebow is averaging 5.8 yards a carry.

Denver’s Fox sloughs off the accuracy question with Tebow.

“Percentage of passes can vary sometimes with the type of passes you throw,” Fox said. “We spend more time running it than we do throwing those short passes, which kind of improves that completion percentage. That’s just one little statistic. I think the biggest one is his record. They don’t predicate much with the rating with his running ability. That’s been as big an impact as his passing ability.”

Denver’s offense also has benefited from an improving defense. During their recent six-game winning streak, the Broncos allowed only 17 points per game. Denver’s 39 quarterback sacks are tied for fourth most in the league.

Denver clinches a playoff spot today with a win and a loss or a tie by Oakland (7-7) at Kansas City.

Whatever happens, it looks like Tebow has earned enough credit with Elway to get the chance to develop more as a passer next season.

“I think the big picture with Tim is we’ve got to see the whole body of work,” Elway said this week. “And so really what you want to see with him is the improvement that’s going to happen over time.

“Because he’s done what we knew he could do, and where we’ve seen his progress is what he does within the pocket,” Elway said. “We know Tim’s a great player, and what we’ve got to do is make him a great quarterback. And what I’ve learned is you’ve got to be able to win from within the pocket. … Do I think he’ll get there? Yeah, I do.”

Broncos hoping for more Tebow magic against…

Chiefs know they must stop Tebow to beat Denver

Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson spent the last couple of days studying video of the Denver Broncos offense and initially had a difficult time remembering the last time he played against an opponent that ran so much option.

“It would be in college,” Johnson finally said. “That’s definitely a college game plan when you do so much option.”

Johnson and the Chiefs can expect to see a lot of the option on Sunday when the Broncos play at Arrowhead Stadium in the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Broncos changed much of what they do on offense since replacing former starting quarterback Kyle Orton with Tim Tebow three weeks ago.

“He may not have the traditional way (of) standing in the pocket and delivering certain (passes),” Johnson said. “But as long as you win, it doesn’t really matter.”

The Broncos are doing that with Tebow. After starting the season 1-4, the Broncos have won two of their last three games and are just a game behind the Chiefs, Raiders and Chargers in the AFC West race.

Tebow is having problems when he passes. He is completing just 46 percent of his attempts, which is well below the league average of 60 percent.

But the Broncos ran for almost 200 yards in two of their last three games and then nearly hit 300 in last week’s win over Oakland. Tebow had more than 100 rushing yards against the Raiders.

“They’re finding an identity and that identity is running the football for a lot of yards,” Chiefs coach Todd Haley said. “When you have a quarterback that can run the ball the way that Tim does, it creates major issues for defenses … essentially (the Broncos) gain an extra offensive player in the run game. When that player is your quarterback and can throw the football, it becomes different than just some of the wildcats and things we see.

“The difference is that generally, the guys running the wildcat aren’t the quarterback. (The Broncos) have the quarterback running the option, which then makes it a triple threat with the running back running, (Tebow) running or him throwing.”

The Chiefs this week in practice are having not only backup quarterback Tyler Palko, like Tebow a left-hander, plays as the Denver quarterback. They’re also using backup wide receiver Jerheme Urban, who isn’t as big as Tebow but a nifty open-field runner.

Urban was a sprinter for his college track team.

The Broncos aren’t exclusively an option team. They also do some conventional things on offense.

But to accommodate Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Florida and one of Denver’s first-round picks last year, the Broncos had to do some things in line with his abilities. The option is one.

“It’s something (Tebow) is more comfortable with, he has a lot of background in it, he’s got a lot of confidence in it,” said Denver coach John Fox, formerly with the Carolina Panthers. “We’re asking a lot, not just of Tim, but our entire offense, the coaching staff, everybody involved. We’ve kind of grown it as we’ve grown with Tim.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the NFC South and we competed against the Atlanta Falcons when they had Michael Vick. Call it what you like, it was that quarterback having the ability to run that creates havoc on defenses because they don’t count that guy as a runner. It’s kind of been done but maybe not to the exact level where we’re kind of at right now.”

Fox would prefer to see the Broncos crank up their passing game. They have 125 passing yards or fewer in each of Tebow’s starts.

“There is no question that we are looking for balance in the run and the pass,” he said. “We’re probably leaning a little bit more on the run right now. We have to improve in the pass game because in this league, you have to be two-dimensional, not one-dimensional, and it’s something that I’m sure he’ll grow, we’ll grow, in time.”

Veteran running back Willis McGahee resurrected his career this season. He’s one of the AFC’s leading rushers and has picked up many of his yards since Tebow took over at quarterbacks.

But even he believes the Broncos are in trouble if they don’t improve their passing game.

“I think (the option) can be something that can help us going forward, but we have to do some other things like getting the ball to receivers,” he said.

The point could be moot for the Chiefs on Sunday if they don’t stop Tebow as a runner. The Broncos scored 38 points against the Raiders last week even though they did little of their damage with passes.

“You’ve got to be even more spot on because this is a guy that can beat you in the running game,” Johnson said. “He’s a heck of a running back when he decides to run the ball.

“I’ve seen some 260-, 270-pound guys hit this guy and he’s just shrugging them off. He has some wiggle to him, too. He’s hard to defend. He gets a lot of (criticism) for not being accurate here and there, but he just poses a lot of problems.”

The Denver Broncos should see a slight rise in this week’s NFL power rankings. But how high will it be?

Nov 8, 2011 – The Denver Broncos (3-5) should see a slight rise in the latest NFL power rankings when they come out on Tuesday. The Broncos certainly showed that they are plenty capable of a comeback (again) by outscoring the Raiders, 31-7, in the second half of Sunday’s game. But by no means has this one victory turned this season around completely, even if the team is just one victory behind the Kansas City Chiefs, the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers (all 4-4).

But the team certainly deserves to move up a couple of spots with that comeback victory. They should jump the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Seattle Seahawks, the former on a bye and the latter a loser to the Dallas Cowboys, who are both 2-6. The same could be said for the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings, also 2-6.

The Philadelphia Eagles have continually been propped up in the rankings because those making them believe that the Eagles are better than what they’ve shown this season. A big jump in last week’s power rankings after a 34-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys was justified, but they fell to 3-5 on Monday following a 30-24 loss to Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears at home in Lincoln Financial Field. Will the Broncos be ahead of them this time? If we believe past results in power rankings are indicative of future ones, the Eagles will still likely be several spots ahead of the Broncos.

There are two other 3-5 teams that are tied with the Broncos and the Eagles. The Washington Redskins are on a four-game losing streak while the Cleveland Browns have dropped two-straight and scored a total of 22 points in those games.

Maybe the Broncos can break through and finish a spot or two higher than No. 25 this week. The Sagarin Ratings had the Broncos as the No. 21 team prior to the conclusion of the Eagles’ Monday night loss. These numbers have usually rated the Broncos higher than the humans have.
